Photo contest focuses on energy

By Codell Rodriquez, The Southern

The SIU Coal Research Center is turning to student photographers to raise awareness of energy in the region.
The center is organizing the photo contest with the theme, “Energy, Society and the Future,” and will accept entries through March 29. All entries must come from a valid SIU email address and the winning photos will be displayed in the Administrative Building of the Coal Development Park in Carterville.
Amy McMorrow Hunter, technology transfer specialist with the center, said the contest is a way to get people involved with the topic of energy at SIU.
“I guess we just wanted a fun way to raise awareness about coal and coal research here at the university,” she said.
The top three photos will win cash prizes. First place receives $100, second place gets $75 and third place will win $50. The top 10 photos will be put on display in the center. There will also be a Google+ page with the photos where people can plus each photo. Those votes will combine with judge opinions when picking the best photos. Each photographer may submit as many as three photos to crcinfo@siu.edu
“We’re very, very excited to see what people come up with,” McMor-row Hunter said.
